What's the difference between UX and UI?

Although UX (User Experience) and UI (User Interface) are often mentioned together, they are different disciplines.

UX design focuses on the user's overall experience: how they find information, how easy it is to complete a task, how content is organized and what obstacles they may run into along the way.

UI design, on the other hand, focuses mainly on the visual interface users interact with: colors, typography, buttons, components, icons, visual hierarchy and other graphic elements.

The two disciplines complement each other. An interface can look great, but if it's hard to use, the experience will fall short. Likewise, a functional platform can miss opportunities if its interface doesn't clearly communicate its content and key actions.

A great experience reduces friction

When someone visits a website, there's usually a goal behind the visit: learning about a service, finding information, requesting a quote, signing up, making a purchase or getting in touch with a company.

Every unnecessary step, confusing element or hard-to-find piece of information can become a barrier.

Good UX/UI design aims to identify and reduce that friction through things like:

  • Clear information architecture.

  • Simple, intuitive navigation.

  • Well-defined visual hierarchy.

  • Visible, easy-to-understand calls to action.

  • Short, easy-to-complete forms.

  • Mobile-friendly design.

  • Clear messages for errors and completed actions.

  • Visual and functional consistency across the entire platform.

The goal isn't just to make a site “look good,” but to help users accomplish what they came to do clearly and efficiently.

How can UX/UI influence conversions?

A conversion is the action a company wants a user to take. Depending on the project, it might be a purchase, a contact request, a form submission, a download, a sign-up or hiring a service.

UX/UI design can support this process by smoothing the path that takes users from the moment they arrive to that action.

For example, if a site offers a service and the button to request information isn't visible, users have to hunt for it. If the form has too many fields, they may decide not to fill it out. If the information is disorganized, they may leave before finding what they need.

In contrast, an experience designed around user behavior and needs can make that journey more direct and easier to follow.

Some elements that can directly influence this journey are:

  • Visual hierarchy: highlights the most important information and draws attention to specific actions.

  • Calls to action (CTAs): clear buttons and prompts help show users what the next step is.

  • Forms: cutting unnecessary fields and structuring information properly makes forms easier to fill out.

  • Navigation: a logical structure helps users quickly find what they're looking for.

  • Responsive design: since a large share of digital interactions happen on mobile devices, the experience needs to adapt properly to different screen sizes.

  • Trust: clear information, testimonials, certifications, policies, contact details and a professional interface can all help build trust during the decision-making process.

Designing for both users and the business

One of the main challenges of UX/UI design is striking a balance between user needs and the organization's goals.

A website might aim to increase contact requests, while an app might aim to boost the use of certain features. In both cases, the design has to consider what users need to complete the action and, at the same time, what the business needs to reach its goals.

That's why, before designing an interface, it's important to understand things like:

  • Who the users are.

  • What users need, based on the target audience.

  • What goals they're trying to achieve.

  • What information they need to make a decision.

  • Where the main friction points are.

  • Which actions are a priority for the business.

  • How the results of the experience can be measured.

This analysis ensures design decisions are backed by strategy, not just aesthetics.

UX/UI and data: design, measure, improve

Designing a digital platform shouldn't be seen as a process that ends when the site or app goes live.

Once users start interacting with the platform, their behavior can be analyzed with digital analytics tools to spot opportunities for improvement.

For example, you can analyze metrics such as:

  • Conversion rate.

  • Form abandonment.

  • Pages with the most and least engagement.

  • Navigation flow.

  • Clicks on calls to action (CTAs).

  • Mobile vs. desktop usage.

  • Points where users drop out of a process.

  • This information shows which elements are working and which can be optimized.

This approach can become part of an ongoing cycle of design, measurement and optimization, rather than just an early stage of development.

A great experience also builds your brand

User experience doesn't just influence a single conversion. It also shapes how people perceive a company.

A slow, confusing or hard-to-use site can hurt how a service is perceived, while a clear, consistent and professional experience can help convey trust and strengthen the relationship between a company and its users.

That's why UX/UI should be understood as a combination of design, functionality, communication and strategy.

Conclusion

A great user experience isn't only about creating attractive interfaces. It's about understanding the people who use a platform, anticipating their needs and designing journeys that let them reach their goals easily.

For businesses, this means creating digital experiences that don't just showcase their products or services, but also make concrete actions easier, such as getting in touch, signing up, buying or requesting information.

That's why, when building a website or app, experience design shouldn't be treated as an afterthought, but as an integral part of the project from the very beginning.
